The traditional Moroccan mint tea

Moroccan mint tea 🫖—simple, fragrant, and kind of magical. Here’s the classic way people make it at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon Chinese green tea (gunpowder tea is traditional)
  • A big handful of fresh mint (spearmint if you can get it)
  • Sugar (traditionally a lot 😄 — adjust to taste)
  • Boiling water

How to make tea?

  1. Warm the teapot
Rinse your teapot with a little boiling water and pour it out. This keeps the tea hot.
  2. Rinse the green tea
Put the green tea in the pot, add a bit of boiling water, swirl gently, and pour it out.
👉 This removes bitterness and dust.
  3. Add mint & sugar
Add the fresh mint (don’t be shy) and sugar.
Traditional style is quite sweet, but you can start light and adjust.
  4. Brew
Fill the teapot with boiling water. Let it steep 3–5 minutes.
  5. Mix the tea (important step!)
Pour a little tea into a glass, then pour it back into the pot. Do this 2–3 times.
    This mixes the flavors evenly.
  6. Serve with flair
Pour from high above the glass to create foam on top (optional but iconic 😉).

Tips

  • The tea should taste fresh, sweet, and minty, not bitter.
  • If it’s bitter → too much tea or steeped too long.
  • Often served 3 times from the same pot, each glass slightly stronger.
